Give Thanks for Kids Climb!

Image

Why?  Because if you have young relatives from out of town staying with you – or your kids need something to do other than stuff themselves with turkey and play video games – get them to the Boston Rock Gym!  They’ll be using up all that stuffing and pumpkin pie generated energy by climbing our walls instead of yours!  That way, everyone will sleep better – even if it is on a pull-out couch!

Kids Climb is being offered at special times over the Holiday weekend!  Wednesday, 3:30-5:30pm, Friday, 1-3pm and 3:30-5:30pm, Saturday, 10:30-12:30pm, 1-3pm, and 3:30-5:30 pm, Sunday, 10:30-12:30pm. Cost is $25 per child.  Reservations and payment required at least 24 hours in advance.

HADU Fitness Classes

This month, the popular Russian fitness trend, HADU, will make its way to the Boston area as we offer the first formalized fitness class of its kind taught by professional HADU trainer Natasha Lukyanova.

Originating in Russia, HADU is a unique fitness routine that uses the body’s own mass and strength for a full body workout, without the use of weights or additional fitness equipment. In HADU, unlike in most conventional training and muscle building systems, opposite muscles are being trained at the same time, making it a highly effective technique for toning and strengthening all parts of the body. Whether practitioners are looking for better posture, more tone or an intense workout, the health benefits of HADU are endless. The classes will strengthen the musculoskeletal system, raise stability of the nervous system normalize exchange processes, and improve cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Natasha Lukyanova is one of the first certified HADU instructors in the world. She discovered the practice over 10 years ago after her career as a professional volleyball player was cut short because of a devastating injury to her tailbone. Unable to practice traditional fitness techniques, Natasha later discovered the rehabilitative routines in HADU, and quickly recovered her physical and mental strength. Now the director of public relations for the international HADU Federation, Natasha is bringing the practice to Boston for the first-time.

Beginning Tuesday, September 18th, 2012, Natasha will teach HADU classes every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning from 9:30AM to 10:30AM and and on Saturday from 11:00AM to 12:00PM for $20 per person, per class, at the Boston Rock Gym. On Saturday, September 15th, at 11:00AM, Natasha will offer a free trial for students. Pre-registration for all classes is necessary and can be made by calling the Boston Rock Gym at (781) 935-7325.

FEATURED FILMS:

WIDE BOYS
American offwidth climbing has spawned a counter-culture of rough and tumble characters who aren’t afraid to bleed their way up a route. So when two proper British lads, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker, crossed the pond to eat up the gnarliest wide cracks in the
west — including the first ascent of the world’s hardest offwidth known as Century Crack — it came as quite a shock.

THE DURA DURA:
Chris Sharma has been the “king” of sport climbing for 15 years, and has created a mecca for hard routes near his home in Catalunya, Spain. Now, the Czech wunderkind, 19 year old Adam Ondra, has come to Sharma’s home turf to take the torch. Sharma and Ondra battle to establish the world’s first 5.15c, while Sasha DiGiulian and Daila Ojeda shred women’s standards with strong ascents of their own.

THE SHARK’S FIN:
Legendary alpinist Conrad Anker nurtured a 20 year obsession with The Shark’s Fin, a spectacular unclimbed granite buttress on the 6,310 meter Mt. Meru, in India. In 2008 Anker, with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk, endured a grueling 18 day push to within hundreds of feet of the summit, only to be turned back. Three years later, the trio makes tough decision to return, despite Anker’s deep family ties, and Ozturk’s ski accident just six months before the trip, which resulted in a fractured skull, a broken neck, and serious doubts about going back.

HONNOLD 3.0
Alex Honnold has become known as the boldest soloist of his generation. In this dangerous game, how does he balance pure ambition with self-preservation? From highball boulder first ascents to 5.13 free solos, from far-flung trad climbing adventures, to speed records on The Nose, Honnold wrestles with this question in preparation for his biggest adventure yet – the Yosemite Triple. In under 19 hours he climbs Mt. Watkins, El Cap, and Half Dome, 95% of it free solo

Flying High: Taking Yoga to New Heights

Ever dream of flying high? Now you can! Beginning September 12th, 2012 we’re offering Aerial Yoga classes, a beautiful art form of yoga on circus silks taught by certified instructor Andrea Isabelle Lucas. Aerial yoga is designed to incorporate the balancing and stretching components of yoga with the strengthening and exhilarating components of aerial arts. Bored of the same workout routine or just want to try something new? Adding aerial yoga to your routine will loosen tight muscles and increase flexibility, build strength and stamina, tone your core and improve balance and coordination, allowing you to reach new fitness heights.

Instructor Andrea Isabelle Lucas has over five years and thousands of hours of experience teaching yoga, barre, and other fitness classes at various locations throughout Greater Boston including Equinox, Exhale and B Yoga. She completed training in Circus Yoga and Rasamaya Aerial Yoga, and has performed occasionally with a small circus troupe since 2009. Holding a B.A. in Women’s Studies and Holistic Wellness from Lesley University, Lucas is a lululemon ambassador for Boston’s Prudential Center store. She recently participated in a trip to Haiti with the non-profit yogaHOPE to study the use of yoga to heal trauma. Aerial yoga lessons are offered as semi-private classes on Wednesday mornings at 10:30AM & Thursday evenings at 7:30PM beginning September 2012. Don’t think you’re strong enough? Not to worry.
